The first signs of autumn are creeping in and here at Gisborough Hall it’s our favourite time of year.  We look forward to wrapping up warm and crunching our way through fallen leaves making the most of the great outdoors in all its autumn glory, and there are lots of great autumnal activities in North Yorkshire to enjoy, we’ve listed a few below.

Yorkshire Arboretum – grounds of Castle Howard

Yorkshire Arboretum is just an hour’s drive from the hotel, travelling through some beautiful English countryside.  It is run as a joint enterprise between Castle Howard Estates and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Originating in 1959, it comprises more than 6,000 trees, including some that are rare or endangered, across a site of 128 acres.  The arboretum is beautiful throughout the year but its worth a visit in autumn to see the rich colour palette, enhanced in the glow of the low autumn sun.

Staithes Festival of Arts & Heritage – Staithes (15th – 17th September)

Staithes has always provided inspiration for artists and the festival celebrates the rich history of creativity and heritage of the village.  Expect to find galleries, sculptures, food and drink, listen to music in the cobbled streets and venues around the village, be entertained by a programme of heritage activities, talks and walks.  You’ll find painters and printmakers, jewellers, ceramicists, craftsmen and women setting out their work in temporary ‘galleries’ throughout the village.

Halloween Murder Mystery – Gisborough Hall (Saturday 28th October, 6.30pm)

Fancy something a little different this Halloween?  Play detective at our murder mystery dinner to discover ‘whodunnit’.

Arrive to a welcome drink, enjoy a delicious three-course meal as the plot unfolds, and once the murderer has been uncovered head to the dance floor.

Show us your best Halloween fancy dress and enjoy an evening of twists, turns, suspicious characters and red herrings! Who will be named top detective?

Illuminated Whitby Abbey (21st – 31st October)

‘Cast light on a dark history this Halloween! See Bram Stoker’s inspiration in a new light as Whitby Abbey is bathed in dramatic illuminations once again. Have your camera at the ready as you explore the gothic splendour of the ruins lit up with all the colours of the rainbow.  See the story of Dracula brought to life before your very eyes within the abbey ruins all aglow.’

North York Moors Dark Skies Fringe Festival (27th October – 5th November)

Whether you’re a keen astronomer or new to stargazing, the North York Moors are a great place to enjoy the night sky.  During the fringe festival there are lots of events and activities to explore.
