History on our doorstep - Gisborough Hall

History on our doorstep

Turn right out of the Hall driveway, take a stroll along the country lane and you’ll come to a ‘kissing gate’ on the right, head through the gate and along the path and you’ll be greeted with the most magnificent view of Gisborough Priory.

Gisborough Priory is just one of the many fascinating historical sites in North Yorkshire, and just a stones throw away from our country house.

Gisborough Hall is steeped in history and a great base to discover many historical sites, here are some of our favourites, all just a short drive or stroll away.

Gisborough Priory

Gisborough Priory was founded about 1119 by Robert I de Brus, ancestor of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland.  The priory has a rich 900-year history and was rebuilt several times due to fire.  Today, the picturesque priory ruins are in the care of English Heritage, and well worth a visit.

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey sits high on the cliff tops overlooking the sea and has a history spanning around 1500 years.  The Abbey has been a significant site for religion and power throughout it’s past, and has been inspiration for poets and writers, including Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Now an English Heritage site, the Abbey can be reached by climbing the famous ‘199 steps’ (or by car!).  Wander through the gothic ruins and discover more about its history at the museum, take in the beautiful coastal views and no trip to Whitby would be complete without an ice cream!

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden

On a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site there is lots to see and do.  The grounds are vast and worth exploring; the ruins of the abbey are breath taking, with vaulted ceilings, grand columns and an imposing tower.  The garden at Studley Royal has a beautiful Georgian water garden, and the dear park is home to over 300 red, sika and fallow deer, surrounded by ancient lime, oak and sweet chestnut trees.  This National Trust property is worth a visit.

Mount Grace Priory

Dating back to the late 14th century, is the most complete surviving Carthusian monastery in Britain.  Monks were expected to live in solitude and the recreated monk’s cell provides an insight of where the monks were expected to live and work.  In the eclectic interiors of the manor house original William Morris designs are displayed alongside medieval features.  The gardens offer seasonal displays, and the orchard is home to traditional Yorkshire varieties of apple trees.

Rievaulx Abbey

Hidden in a beautiful valley just outside the market town of Helmsley are the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, that date back over 900 years.  Discover the history of the medieval monastery in the museum, which give an insight into the history of the abbey displaying artifacts such as stone carvings, chess pieces and gold coins. Audio tours are available of this English Heritage site, which is definitely worth visiting.
