Why Gisborough Hall is spelt differently to Guisborough
If you’ve ever visited us, you might have noticed something curious… our name is spelt Gisborough Hall, while the town we sit proudly beside is spelt Guisborough.
So, what’s the story behind the extra “u”?
The answer lies in history, and it’s a story that stretches back almost 900 years.
In the 12th century, Gisborough Priory was founded by the Robert de Brus. At that time, spelling wasn’t standardised, which meant words and place names were often written in different ways. The Priory and the surrounding estate became known as “Gisborough,” a spelling that was passed down through the centuries to the Hall you see today.
As the town around us grew and language evolved, the spelling Guisborough gradually became the accepted version for the settlement. But the Hall, and the dramatic ruins of the Priory, retained the historic form of the name.
Today, the difference is more than just a letter or two. It’s a reminder of our heritage and the centuries of history that have shaped both the Hall and the town.
